Whats the best way to get cheap airfare?
I need to fly from the DC area(dulles airport or bwi) to portland, OR. I can fly any weekend to there, but right now its so expensive to go to portland. I could fly to LA for under 250 dollars, but portland is well over 450 dollars. Why the huge difference? Just because LA gets so much more traffic? Even Seattle is at least 25% cheaper. Where can I get great deals for a flight to portland during the month of july? Do any of those last minute sites actually offer good deals?

You can use discount sites such as: expedia.com hotwire.com travelocity.com orbitz.com cheaptickets.com kayak.com All of these sites usually have low airfare and are competitive to gain your business, but be careful. Although these sites promise you the cheapest airfare around, you can often find cheaper airfare by going to an airline's website directly. southwest.com continental.com aa.com (american airlines) northwestairlines.com usairways.com Avoid Delta and United Airlines. They are EXTREMELY overpriced! Continental and Southwest are always the cheapest when consulting airfare at the airline's direct website.

See how much ticket prices are on JetBlue. You may have to connect in New York City. Lots of airlines fly into LAX so due to price competition, the ticket prices are lower. Also there are more frequency in flights to that city. I would not try buying a last minute flight. Those can be expensive. If you still cannot find anything reasonable, try http://www.priceline.com. You can name a price you want to pay and see if anyone is willing to sell you a ticket.

Also, make sure you buy them online... otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.
