Direct flights from U.K. to Portland, Oregon

Direct flights from U.K. to Portland, Oregon?
Where can I get a DIRECT and preferably cheap flight from an airport near Doncaster, Sheffield or Leeds United Kingdom to Portland Oregon, USA? All the flights I find involve a stop off, usually in Amsterdam. I'd prefer a direct flight as this is my first time travelling abroad. Please help! wallmeis: thx for the detailed answer lol going all the way down to London seems a long way to go by coach and expensive. I found a flight on British Airways thats a little closer, it goes from Manchester to Chicago then to Portland. If anyone has more help or web links please post!

There aren't any direct flights from anywhere in the UK to Oregon. The hub-and-spoke system of airline routes is vastly superior for cost savings. They replace the old days of airlines having direct flights from every airport to every other airport, abandoned since sometime in the 1980s. The most direct route is London/Heathrow to Seattle which flies within a few hundred miles of the North Pole. Seattle is a mere 160 miles (260 km) from Portland, so either rent a car and drive from there—often cheaper than flying—or catch a commuter airline. An itinerary to Portland booked through Seattle usually uses Horizon/Alaska Airlines which runs 12+ commuter flights a day. Alas, $976 is the cheapest Seattle-connecting flight I see for 2 weeks from now, departing November 10th. The cheapest is $737 which connects through JFK (New York). [Delta 4 and Delta 745] Next is Air France 3662 and 8860, almost certainly code shares with Delta but for one dollar more $738. These have almost a 7 hour layover, good for a brief visit to NYC—it's even at a decent time of day. Several flights on United are $765 with a choice of connecting through Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington DC, or San Francisco. The shortest en-route sequence (12 h 45 m) is $2,972 on BA through Vancouver BC. A much more affordable variation is another BA itinerary at $782 which goes from LHR to Paris, Seattle, and Portland in 15 hours 5 minutes. Don't sweat plane changes. Virtually all are at the same airport (though carefully check New York connections), so it's generally an easy walk from an arriving gate to the departing gate. Often the crew will announce just before landing which gate has which flight, and there are displays in the terminals which give full updated detailed status (like this http://www.portofportland.com/flights_current.aspx?Airline=UA ). Be prepared for several "strip checks" thanks to September 11 paranoia. Removing footwear and running them through the X ray scanner is normal, as well as everything in your pockets. For extra "special" customers, they might request pant leg and shirt roll up and scan with an electronic sniffer (though this has happened only once to me in the last 30+ flights). Be sure to check the rules on what is allowed on a flight. Assuming you are British, here are some terms you should know and use outside the UK: * return ticket = round trip ticket * car boot = car trunk * car bonnet = car hood * loo/wc = rest room * people carrier = passenger van (or just "van") * van = delivery van or parcel truck * "beware of subsidence" = ??? (still no idea what this is about)

Its only via ams in europe,u have to go to a us airport first and then on. Ur ba flight does not exist,it maybe to chicago and then u will have to change the aircraft and the airline, check it,it must be a code share flight on some other airline. I think try from lon and u can try ryan air and easyjet to lon and then on for cheaper. Maybe try via paris on air france. Last I checked, the only international flights to and from Portland Oregon were Asia.

there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely give you the best prices available. check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it's very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online... otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.
