I'm going on a flight to Portland Maine and i have a 4 hour layover in new york where my friend lives. i just want to know if its possible for her to come in the airport and stay with me for 4 hours and then leave.

Oh the wonderful New York layovers heading to Maine. I've done that quite a few times. Your friend can visit you, however, she will not be allowed past the security checkpoint. So you will have to exit the secured area. I would suggest meeting her at the baggage claim for your flight coming into New York. Give her the flight number and tell her to find which baggage claim that flight will be using. Keep in mind that you will have to go back through security before your flight to Portland. Lines can be long, so you should allow at least an hour before your take off time. Your actual time you will be able to visit with your friend will only be about 2 to 2 1/2 hours, so make sure she's willing to travel/park/pay for parking just to see you for that short amount of time. They can't get through security without a ticket or without an employee i.d. The only exception would be if you were bringing or picking up an unaccompanied minor.

She can absolutely do that. The only thing you'd need to do is step out of the secure area, because she won't be able to go inside. In any case, the nicer place to meet is at Figs, a restaurant outside the secure area in the central terminal. Just make sure that you're keeping an eye on the lines to go back through security to catch your connecting flight.

Yes-- but you will have to go through security and meet her in the check-in area of the airport. Laguardia is an awful airport and there is almost nothing to do before security, but atleast you guys can catch up for a while. Just make sure to leave yourself a little extra time to get back through security. She could probably even pick you up and you could go have lunch somewhere near the airport. I rememeber I met a friend at the Crowne plaza near laguardia for lunch one time.
