Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are the cheapest days to fly and return. I always just use the yahoo flight link to buy tickets. But if you are flying on short notice, you might wanna check one of the specialized web sites.

In the market between Portland and LA, it makes no difference what day of the week you travel. The airfares are based on advance purchase, not day of the week or minimum stay in that market.
