Why did the stewardess close my window for the night during my flight from Tokyo to Portland, Oregon

Why did the stewardess close my window for the night during my flight from Tokyo to Portland, Oregon?
That was the shortest, darkest night I've ever seen in my life taking NWA. Why does the window need to be closed during the night portion of the flight?

Trips that cross the Pacific Ocean take a Great Circle route- that is, they go over the North pole. Any sun that hits the snow reflects back very brightly.

the window shade is shut / close. because when you fly from tokyo to portland you will pass/cross the International date line. night and day. you left tokyo at night but after a few hours the sun is shining in the other side of the world. that is why the window shade is close/ shut to let the passengers sleep with respect to the local time of origin " tokyo". if you think that it is too dark you can turn /switch on your individual light.

When the sun comes up, it wakes everyone up, especially children... We used to go around and close the window shades and people would ask why we were closing them when it's dark outside. Easy answer "Because it wont stay that way!!" I also didn't like closing them when the sun was coming up because usually people were already asleep and I didn't want to disturb them. Better to do it when they're still awake and watching the movie, etc. As a passenger, I hated waking up 3 hours before I had to because the cabin was filled with light and all the babies had woken up screaming. Now I fly with as a mom myself and it's awlful when the sun is ramming right into one of my little ones' eyes because someone didn't think to lower the shade...especially if it was an effort to get them to sleep in the first place. As a Flight Attendant, I really tried to avoid this and keep those shades down. Boy what a difference it made! I'd look down and see a nice peaceful, quiet cabin... Flying overnight is so uncomfortable anyway, this was ONE thing we could do to improve it for our passengers. If someone wanted to look outside, they were welcome to do so but I asked them nicely to pull down the shade again before going to sleep themselves.
